Chris Gifford has added the wines of Angelo Gaja to his list of wines now available from The Allotment Wine Co.  One of Italy’s most iconic wine producers needs no introduction,  Gaja is most famous for the wines  he makes in the Piemonte communes of Barbaresco and Barolo. In the last decade or so he also acquired vineyards in Tuscany where he now produces award winning wines.  Look out for:

Gaja Ca’Marcanda ‘Promis’

An incredible wine, and a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.  Located on the Maremma coast beside the town of Bolgheri. The neighbours of Ca' Marcanda, are Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The name Promis does mean 'promise' and it was the promise that Gaja made to his family that this new venture in Tuscany would maintain the high quality they were used to seeing in Piemonte

Gaja, Sito Moresco

Made in Gaja's native Piemonte, the grapes grown in the estate farmed by the Moresco family, hence the name. It's located in the commune of Barbaresco in the tiny village of Treiso and the Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes (50% and 40% respectively) grown here are augmented by some Merlot (about 10%) from neighbouring vineyards. A gorgeous, complex wine and never too heavy or overpowering.

Gaja, Magari\

A Super-Tuscan worthy of its price and classification. Absolutely delicious, this is structured, rich, profound and age-worthy. A Bordeaux blend in varieties but quintessentially Tuscan in execution and flavour.  A blend of Cabernet Franc (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Petit Verdot (10%. The appellation is Bolgheri and this bottle sits very comfortably at the table with this region's other star offerings from estates such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

Gaja, Barbaresco

One of the most iconic wines of the world from one of the best vintages in living memory.
This is supple, structured, powerful and intense, yet balanced, with poise and grace. 100% Nebbiolo taken from the best sites in the family's fourteen vineyards located in the two villages of Barbaresco and Treiso. It is a remarkable achievement of Gaja's that the demand for this wine grows year after year, as the quality, which was always stellar, has steadily grown in parallel. This wine is the centrepiece of Gaja's wine range and is the beating heart of his native Piemonte.
